MARIPOSA – The Mariposa Photo Club welcomes the public for a special gathering on Wednesday, June 12. This will be a photo-shoot field trip to Bear Valley, where professionals will help everyone become more familiar with their cameras.
The group will gather at 5 p.m. at the Mariposa History Center parking lot to form carpools to the historic site. The town was a rich one when gold mining was at its peak in the 1800s. It also was the center of John C. Freemont’s massive land grant.Plush hotels, restaurants and fancy homes were there. Then, as so often happened, the gold started playing out, fires swept through, and residents drifted away.
But some buildings, including the Bon Ton Saloon, Trabucco Store, Odd Fellows Hall, a school house and jail remains are favorites of photographers.
The evening light is particularly good for taking pictures, color or black and white. The sun is low, shadows are long and the light takes on golden and rosy tones.
