Boy Scouts’ American Flag Retirement Ceremony

OAKHURST — “When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be ‘retired’ with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation’s flag,” according to the Boy Scouts of America. “The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag.”

Boy Scout Troop 316 will hold its annual flag retirement ceremony on Veterans Day, on the knoll behind Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church. Veterans Day is on Saturday, Nov. 11 and the ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m.

Troop 316 has been honoring veterans with this ceremony for more than a decade, says George Stillman, and the community is invited to attend. Sierra Vista is located at 39696 Highway 41 in Oakhurst.
