Books, Bikes, Murals & More

OAKHURST – Spring at BGC brought a fun group of environmental education activities, starting with Global Youth Service Day and ending with Earth Day.

We also had a visit from Yosemite National Park Ranger Christine Raines with another installment of our Junior Ranger Program.

Club members helped clean up the litter and debris from nearby Oakhurst Parkway and Creek Trail, while learning about the environment and conservation. They also started seeds and grew seedlings in our garden for a late summer harvest, and built a new scarecrow.

Our Board President Bob Macaulay kicked off his campaign running for Honorary Oakhurst Mayor, with all money raised going to our awesome Club.

Check out BGC Bob for Mayor on Facebook for all the current updates and fundraising events. There are many great things to do and participate in throughout the summer!

Our newest mural project started with YHS senior Libby Haggard, now graduated with the Class of 2015, featuring her beautiful artwork on the backside of our Clubhouse, facing Oak Creek Intermediate (OCI), with help from our members. We can’t wait to see the finished product. Check back for more updates as the project wraps up this summer.

Spring ELKS fundraiser - courtesy of BGC Peggy DeckerAt Yosemite High School last month, our BGC kids watched the ELK (Everybody Loves Kids) fundraising campaign cars roll through Oakhurst and cheered them on! It was an excellent mid-week leadership field trip; our BGC kids were very thankful and had fun, too! We appreciate the ELK fundraisers!

Early of June brought a nice night for SAFER Choices Parent Night, SMART Girls, & Passport to Manhood — programs to help preteens and teens cope with adolescence and questions they may have regarding peer pressure, bullying, drugs, alcohol, sex, body image, and all the other things young people are faced with these days.

June 5th brought a fantastic ending to our Winter/Spring 2015 Books for Bikes reading competition. Thomas Huynh and Kaitlyn Fisher were our brand-new-bike winners, after faithfully turning in their weekly reading logs from January through June. Both kids won a brand new Huffy bike, each with new helmet! Great job reading, kids!

Kids participated in relay races, timed physical events, and ran a baton race around the track at OCI using our Olympic Day flag! It was wesome fun, and a great taste of summer!

Check out our great Summer Programs starting Monday, June 15. Everyone, have a safe and fun vacation, and see you at the Boys & Girls Club!
