Bikes And Blue Doors At The BGC

OAKHURST – Early January got our members back in the groove at the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of Oakhurst, while spectacularly warm weather brought toy car painting.

Joe Mouck made the whole car himself!

We also played blindfold tag, and engaged in some poster making for school officer positions. Fun with arts and crafts continued through the month, as the Club celebrated National Rubber Duck Day, with the kids participating by coloring and decorating duck silhouettes on paper any way they wanted.

Ranger Christine gives a Junior Ranger lesson at the BGCA great kick off to our 2015 programming, mid-January brought back Ranger Christine Raines and the Yosemite National Park Junior Ranger Program. Our BGC members spent the day learning about winter wildlife and all our local furry creatures. The second class with Ranger Christine will be coming in March.

Also in January our awesome BGC kids and staff had a blast picking up trash around our creek for MLK Day of Service. They spent the afternoon learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, standing up for their beliefs and values, as well as giving back to others and their community.

MLK DayThe kids got about 40 lbs. of trash out of the creek right around the Club and under the bridge. AWESOME job with BGC kids giving back to their local community!

Three very lucky and fabulous BGC members earned brand new bikes at the end of January. They received them for participating the greatest number of times in our Power Hour Homework Club, as well as reading the greatest amount of pages/and/or books since the start of school back in August of 2014.

Books for Bikes 2Congrats to Katelyn Thompson, Bill Gao, and Steven Nguyen. Keep up the great work!

In early February, our Oakhurst BGC gained a new 4-Square Court! Our members were very excited to have this completed, and were super happy to start using it! The court was painted by staff members Cameron Whitaker & Peggy Decker as volunteer time.

Books for Bikes 1A great couple of days of Arts and Crafts for Valentine’s Day here at the Club, featuring feather valentine plate hats, heart animals, and other heart shaped themed art. A big welcome and great huge Thank you to Sharon Inez for being our newest volunteer! She played “Go Fish” with many of our younger members last week, many for the first time.

Blue Door 1With the early February rain keeping the kids inside, our members worked on their decorating for the national as well as local 2015 BGC Blue Door Decorating contest. Wish us luck, as the national prize is $5000! This project continued until we let out for Valentine’s Day weekend. If you look close and zoom in on the pic the kids put their names in the waterfall!

Upcoming events at the Club include a mural project with UC Merced student Anna Calderon, another Junior Ranger Class, as well as National Boys and Girls Club Week at the end of March.
