Bear Hit By Car, Cub Up A Tree

NORTH FORK – A mother bear was apparently hit by a car on Road 223 just east of Thornberry Road tonight.

At 8:07 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, a report came in of a bear dead in the road near Teaford Saddle. The reporting party told dispatch that a cub was running into the road to check on the mother who was lying in the westbound lane.

CHP responded for traffic control, and the baby bear apparently climbed up a tree nearby, according to a motorist who was passing by and stopped to assist.

Fish & Game was notified, but didn’t have anyone to respond to the incident. CHP removed the bear from the road, and the baby is still unaccounted for at this time.

  1. Thats a shame, little guy was just learning to be on his own. what can you do?

  2. I’ve been driving up in and around these mountains since I was 12 when I learned how to drive a Dune buggy…people drive very carelessly up here…EVERY DAY I see animals dead on the road and one would think after a while that some of these boorish Cro-Magnon idiots up here would STAY ALERT and HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR LIFE!

  4. It seems like it would be easier to catch the cub if they left mama there (off the road of course). Perhaps they could set a trap for the cub. Otherwise, the cub will surely die.

  5. I heard at the salon today the baby was found dead today – or maybe this morning? I saw a dead bear on the S-curve this morning don’t know if it was the baby or the mother had yet to be removed. Wasn’t there tonight on ride home. Wish folks would be more cautious.
