“Be The Power Of One” At Oakhurst Library

OAKHURST – The Oakhurst Library will host a very special event on Saturday, July 18 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Susan and Tim Madden, co-founders of their non-profit organization, “Be the Power of One,” will be discussing their work in Haiti, which has been ravaged by recent storms and a 2010 earthquake. The Maddens and their organization have promoted Haitian education and believe this will lead to improvement throughout the entire country. With this goal in mind, they have:

  • Provided textbooks, school supplies, lunches and teacher salaries for an elementary school in Pignon, Haiti
  • Raised funds and coordinated with local Rotary clubs to drill a well that eliminates the need for students to collect water from a nearby river
  • Organized an annual Summer School program for up to 300 students

They celebrate the milestone that the first recipient of their higher education scholarship is now giving back to his community.

Susan and Tim are past presidents of two Oakhurst Rotary groups: Sierra Rotary and Sierra Sunrise Rotary, respectively. They will describe how a taxicab drive in Miami led them to a chance meeting that changed their lives. The resulting non-profit is based on the notion that one dollar, one hour of service or one moment of compassion can change the world.

The Maddens are creative partners in “Above the Fog Marketing,” a local marketing firm specializing in affordable solutions for small businesses. Both are originally from Southern California but now enjoy life in our foothills and giving of themselves through service.
