OAKHURST — In an annual mountain area tradition, the Marine Corps League #1121 together with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8743 hosted the ‘Avenue of the Flags’ Monday at Oakhill Cemetery.
The group of community volunteers — one as young as three years old — teamed with members of the local 4H Club to place dozens of flags throughout the cemetery for the popular Memorial Day event.
The event also included a memorial service at 10 a.m. at the cemetery.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers made sure that social distancing practices and masks were part of this year’s event.
“Today’s ceremony commemorates all of our fallen soldiers so that we remember them on this special day,” said Maryann Encisco, public affairs officer for the Marine Corps League. “Our time-honored tradition is to put up the flags every Memorial Day to honor these fallen heroes.”
