Ann Hart and Vicki D. Thomas will Exhibit in the 17th Annual Sierra Art Trails

MARIPOSA — Local artists Ann Hart and Vicki D. Thomas join together again this year to exhibit at Vicki’s Black Oak Art Studio in Mariposa, 209-966-2071.

The Studio Tour runs from Friday, Oct. 4 to Sunday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ann Hart uses clay she hunts for in the Sierra foothills. She digs it up and cleans it, then let’s it rest to get to just the right consistency for sculpting. This year, with the generous help of local potter and artist, Karen Mentzer, the Sierra clay was tested in Karen’s kiln, and it passed the firing test!

The positive result has led to new and exciting ideas that include the glazing possibilities.

Ann will exhibit wildlife animals of the Sierra Nevada, both fired, and not fired.

This year her sculptures depict the loss of wildlife habitat due to the significant tree die off and the devastating fires in the Sierras. Her sculpted animals are making their way in a very changed landscape of scorched rock, and barren trees. But somehow life persists, birds nest, bears explore and cubs play.

Ann’s work can be seen on the Made in Mariposa website at:

Vicki Thomas will show her collections of Yosemite paintings, landscapes, woodland animals and florals. She works in watercolor, acrylic, and will have black/white ink drawings. Vicki also has an intriguing display of alcohol ink paintings. Added to her collection this year is oil palette knife of Yosemite and landscapes.

The artist is known to have a love for painting children and fantasy in whimsical themes. For this reason, you may find little fairies nestled among the flowers or having tea on daisy petals.

Vicki  is mentoring Aya Westerling, a fourteen-year-old student, who paints charming animals, birds, and pets in watercolor and will be showing her hand-crafted jewelry. Check the Sierra Art Trail’s catalog to find her studio.

Vicki’s work is also represented at the Ridgeline Gallery & Gifts, 5031 A, Hwy. 140 in Mariposa.
