Ag Student Rewarded with Award for Outstanding Achievement

FRESNO, CAFresno State senior, Anthony Agueda, has received the CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement.  This award is given by the California State University (CSU) system.  Additionally, it recognizes students for their strong academic performance, personal accomplishments, and community service.  On top of this, there will be a milk drive at Gibson Market Farm.

Family Tradition in Agriculture

To start, Agueda grew up working on his family’s dairy farm, Alberto Dairy, in Stanislaus County.  His grandfather founded the dairy in 1981 after immigrating to the United Stated from the Azores Islands in Portugal.

“My grandfather immigrated here at 19 from the Azores islands in Portugal, with nothing but his suitcase,” Agueda said. “He worked three jobs in agriculture and went back after five years, to marry my grandmother.  They moved back to America and started the dairy in 1981.”

Initially, Agueda’s grandparents were the first people he shared the news with when he found out.  Fittingly, they were the ones to inspire his commitment to agriculture.

Leading in the Ag Community

Further, at Fresno State, Agueda has been heavily involved in the agricultural community.  For example, he has taken on leadership roles in:

Additionally, he has also volunteered with the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau and the California Milk Advisory Board.

Supporting Education & Food Security

Moreover, Agueda has made an impact through his volunteer work.  For instance, he has hosted virtual dairy farm tours nationwide and organized milk drives during Hunger Action Month for five consecutive years.  Fortunately, his efforts have helped deliver thousands of gallons of milk to local banks.  In turn, supporting families and children in need.

After graduation, Agueda plans to oversee business operations at Alberto Dairy.  Thus, showing he is committed to making the farm more sustainable and is working toward the goal of achieving net-zero emissions.

CSU Trustees’ Award Ceremony

Equally important, the CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement began in 1984.  This year, Agueda is one of 23 students, one from each CSU campus, who will be honored at a ceremony.  Moreover, the ceremony is to be held at the CSU Chancellor’s Office in Long Beach on September 24th, at 4:15 pm.

Upcoming Milk Drive

Gibson Farm Market hosts the Milk Drive, taking place on October 15th, from 10 am – 2 pm.

Lastly, in October, Agueda will help lead a milk drive through Fresno State’s Dairy Science Club.  Specifically, the drive is part of the Intercollegiate Give-A-Gallon Challenge.  In this competition, collegiate agricultural programs compete to collect and distribute milk donations.  On October 15th, people can drop off donations at the Gibson Farm Market from 10 am – 2 pm.
