Wounded Mariposa Deputy Identified As Rudy Mirelez

MARIPOSA COUNTY – The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of the deputy shot in the line of duty on Thursday, Oct. 1, as 10-year veteran Rudy Mirelez. Deputy Mirelez is still listed in critical condition in a Modesto hospital where he will undergo many more surgeries on his road to recovery.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the family of Deputy Mirelez has been with him in the hospital, and his wife has expressed gratitude for the supportive network surrounding them.

“We would like to thank our family at the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office and our extended family at the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office for round-the-clock support for Rudy,” says the deputy’s wife Christine Mirelez, present with her children.

“The outpouring of community support for Rudy has been inspiring and amazing. Rudy’s recovery is our biggest concern and we would like to ask for your continued thoughts and prayers and request that you respect our privacy as we continue to process this tragic event and support our husband and father.”

The Mariposa Deputy Sheriff’s Association has established an account at West America Bank. Donations can be made to: Acct# 0168484285 at any branch of West America Bank or mailed to Post Office Box 157, Mariposa, CA 95338. A Go Fund Me account has also been set up on behalf of Deputy Mirelez and family.

The deputy was shot twice Thursday morning about 6 a.m. after pulling over a Merced man who opened fire on officers.
