Wounded Deputy Stable, Account Set Up For Donations

MARIPOSA COUNTY – The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office says the deputy shot during a traffic stop yesterday morning just south of Mariposa is listed in critical but stable condition at this hour.

They report that he is able to respond to voice commands and make eye contact with visitors. Many Sheriff’s Office staff and family members have been with him round the clock since the incident occurred.

The name of the deputy has not yet been released.

“We have received an overwhelming amount of support during this time,” says Public Information Officer Kristie Mitchell. “It seems as though every law enforcement agency in the state has reached out to us to help, console, support, or just show up.”

Kristie says the main office has had a steady flow of community members walking in asking for updates, dropping off cards or just wanting to say a few words.

“The Sheriff’s Office can’t thank everyone enough,” she says.

There have been several inquires by many wondering what they can do for the deputy. The Mariposa Deputy Sheriff’s Association has established an account at West America Bank. Donations can be made to: Acct# 0168484285 at any branch of West America Bank or mailed to PO Box 157, Mariposa, Calif. 95338.

The deputy was shot twice yesterday morning about 6 a.m. after pulling over a Merced man who opened fire on officers.
