Winter Storm Warning For Sierra Nevada Mountains

SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS — The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow in the Sierra from Yosemite to Kings Canyon.

The heavy snow warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 p.m Sunday, with snow expected to begin Saturday evening and become heavy at times Sunday morning and afternoon, diminishing Sunday evening

Snow levels are forcasted to start at around 7,000 feet on Saturday evening, lowering to near 4,000 feet overnight into Sunday.

Snow accumulations of 12 to 24 inches are expected above 6,000 feet, with 3 to 12 inches between 4,000 and 6,000 feet, and winds southwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

The heavy snow may make many roads impassable and may produce power outages due to the weight of the snow on tree limbs and power lines. Gusty winds will lead to blowing snow, reduced visibility, and may cause additional power outages.

Significant amounts of snow are expected to make travel dangerous. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
