What a Deal! Thrifting In The Oakhurst Area

If you’re a thrift store junkie like I am, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the various shops we have here in the Yosemite area. I’ve gotten so many deals at the thrift stores here in town, half my house is decorated with my fun finds. I mean, why pay retail if you can recycle?

And when you’re ready for a clean out, many of the thrift stores in town take donations. But leaving junk at a store’s doorstep can cause many problems for them, so please read and follow these guidelines, as well as minding the individual donation rules for each store:

Guidelines for Thrift Store Donations:

  • Ask the thrift stores what they will and will not accept. Some have it posted in or near the donations area. Some won’t take books, some won’t take furniture.
  • Do NOT leave bags of clothing or items when the store is closed. It attracts people who go through the bags and scatter unwanted items. This makes it extremely difficult for the store owners to maintain and clean up.
  • Leave your items in designated donation areas only. It will help keep our town neat and tidy.
  • Do not donate broken furniture, stained or ripped clothing, flammable liquids, or anything you yourself would throw away. Thrift stores are not transfer stations, please don’t dump your garbage on them.
  • Mind the season – many thrift store owners ask that you only donate clothes appropriate for the current season. That means please don’t donate sweaters, winter coats, and boots in the middle of summer. They’ll just have to go into storage and they have no way of knowing off-hand if they are needed or not. Wait until fall to donate holiday items, January for valentine’s décor. They’ll thank you for it!
  • If the store/organization is a registered 501(c)(3) charity, you are eligible for a tax deduction for donating. Check with the store personnel and if so, get a receipt!
