AHWAHNEE – Firefighters responded to reports of a column of smoke rising in the area of Miami Mountain Lookout just before 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
The fire burned just west of Highway 49, north of Ahwahnee off Miami Mountain Road. First engine at scene reported the fire about 1/2 to 3/4 acre.
Air tankers and helicopters were quickly over the fire, and by 5:45 p.m., crews had a line around the entire perimeter. The fire was held to less than 2 acres and no structures were threatened.
Crews are still on scene doing mop-up and securing lines, but some have already been released.
Early reports are that the fire was caused by a lightning strike.
