Three Suffer Major Injuries In Head-On Crash

MARIPOSA COUNTY — A head-on collision on Highway 49 near Darrah Road last Friday sent three people to the hospital, all with major injuries.

Just after 3:30 p.m. on May 13, Robert Spiers, 37, of Mariposa was northbound on Highway 49 in a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, just south of Darrah Road. There was an 8-year-old child in the passenger seat.

Jolynn Russell, 38, of Oakhurst, was southbound in a 2014 Toyota Tacoma when Spiers crossed over the solid double yellow lines and collided head-on into Russell’s vehicle, according to CHP.

Spiers sustained major injures and was transported by Mercy Ambulance and Mercy Air to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. His juvenile passenger was also seriously injured and was taken to John C. Fremont hospital in Mariposa.

Russell was flown by Mercy Air to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with major injuries.

CHP investigating officers believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision, which remains under investigation.

“The California Highway Patrol would like to remind everyone that drugs or alcohol can severely interfere with a persons ability to drive a motor vehicle,” says the CHP in a statement on this crash. “Take the necessary precautions and don’t drive impaired.”
