Teen Out Of Surgery After Sunday’s Deadwood Crash

OAKHURST — After a head-on collision on Deadwood yesterday that ended with a 14-year-old being airlifted with major injuries, several of those who were on the scene when it happened have been asking for updates.

One communication came in the form of a comment on the original article. “Any update on the condition of those injured? I was one of the first on scene and would really like to know how they are doing.”

The family of the young man from Burbank responded to the inquiry, “Thank you so much for your concern. The injured parties are my parents and nephew, and although they sustained quite painful injuries, none were life threatening. They were very lucky and we are feeling very grateful.”

Another response was from the mother of the teen who was airlifted.

“They are shaken up. My son got out of surgery ok. Thank you for the help.”

One notable local who was on the scene and rendered aid was Madera County Sheriff Commander Tyson Pogue, who was off duty and out for a Sunday drive with family when the crash happened just south of Oakhurst on Highway 41.

Tyson got the uncle and nephew out of the wrecked vehicle, and his wife held the teen until paramedics arrived.

Tyson downplayed his part in the incident, by saying, “I didn’t do anything special. Just happened to be there.”

The family may not agree with his assessment, and are grateful to everyone who came to their aid.
