MADERA – As the city gears up for the third annual Madera Pomegranate Festival this Saturday, Nov. 2, the city is adding two other events to the festive mix.
The 2013 Pomegranate Classic Golf Tournament takes place Friday, Nov. 1 at the Madera Municipal Golf Course. Registration for the tournament starts at 11 a.m., followed by a noon shotgun start.
The cost is $65 per player or $240 per team. More information can be found at www.maderamuni.com.
The next event, the second annual Madera Pomegranate Softball Tournament, takes place Nov. 9 and 10. The tournament is being held at the Madera Sunrise Rotary Sports Complex. The cost to enter is $200 per team, with the deadline to enter by Nov. 6. Teams can register by calling Adam Romero at 559-661-5495.
“Both events are great additions to the Pomegranate Festival,” said Jarrod Lyman, Director of PR for the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau and chair of the Madera Tourism Alliance of the Madera Chamber of Commerce.
“Madera is The Heart of Pomegranate Country and to see the community proving that by getting behind this event and creating their own additions to the festival is really exciting,” he said.
The annual festival takes place at the Madera Municipal Airport from 10 am to 5 pm. There will be numerous vendors, food booths featuring pomegranate infused recipes, cooking demos, go-kart racing, the Fresno Chaffee Zoomobile as well as the popular Pomegranate Grenade Launch.
“This year’s festival looks to be much larger than last years,” said Lyman. “We’re excited by what we have planned.”
Admission and parking for the festival are both free. There is even a free concert featuring The Marie Wilson Band.
The Tourism Alliance also repeated last year’s marketing ploy by creating another pomegranate-themed parody video, this time spoofing the hit song Thrift Shop. Madera’s Mayor and former Mayor both appeared in the video as well as a City Councilman and California State Assemblyman and numerous community members.
