Sixth Annual Law Day In Yosemite National Park

YOSEMITE – More than 300 eighth grade students from throughout the area are expected to attend the 6th annual Law Day celebration scheduled for May 4 in Yosemite National Park.

Legal analyst Laurie Levenson is this year’s keynote speaker. Ms. Levenson is noted for her work as a commentator for ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN television networks and for National Public Radio.

The theme for this year’s event is “Equal Justice for All.” This is in celebration of the 150th anniversary of ratification of the 14th Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause, according to local attorney Carol Moses, who chairs the event for the San Joaquin Valley Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

As part of the celebration, students from schools in Yosemite gateway communities have been invited to participate in an essay contest. The top three writers will be recognized during the event and invited to read their essays.

Recently retired U.S. Magistrate Michael Seng and his replacement in Yosemite, Judge Jeremy Peterson, are both expected to attend, and Federal and State judges throughout the area have been invited.

Keynote speaker Levenson is a professor of law at Loyola Law School, with a focus on Ethical Advocacy, Capital Habeas Corpus, and the Project for the Innocent. She also teaches at several law schools, is writing a variety of texts on criminal law and procedure and has authored about 50 Law Review articles.

Levenson has covered many high-profile cases including the O.J. Simpson murder trial, Rodney King beating trial, Menendez brothers murder trials, Michael Jackson molestation trial, Scott Peterson murder trial, Bernard Madoff investigation, President Clinton impeachment, Robert Blake murder trial, trial of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, prosecution of Anna Nicole Smith’s physicians, and the prosecution of Dr. Conrad Murray.
