Sheriff’s Office Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting

MADERA COUNTY – The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 20, in the area of Avenue 12 and Highway 41.

The shooting occurred just after 3 p.m. during a pursuit that followed a carjacking at gunpoint near the Chevron on Avenue 15.

Just before 2 p.m. on Sunday, CHP officers and Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports that an Hispanic male had pointed a gun at a motorist near Avenue 15 at Highway 41, and then stole their car. Two other males were initially reported to have been involved in the incident.

Those two suspects fled on foot but were detained by citizens until CHP officers arrived and took them into custody, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The third left in the stolen vehicle.

After being located in the orchards along Avenue 12, the suspect was shot by a CHP officer. The details of that incident are under investigation.

Following the shooting, a search of the area where the suspect was killed was conducted, and a firearm was located. Live rounds were also discovered in several different locations within the crime scene area, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The search for additional evidence remains underway.

The two men who were initially detained were interviewed by detectives and released.

The identity of the decedent is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
