Sheriff Reminds Residents To Collect Mail Daily

MADERA COUNTY — Sheriff Jay Varney‬ wants to remind the community that with the holiday season upon us, mail and package thefts increase. Thieves steal mail for identity theft purposes all year long and, near the holidays, the Sheriff’s Office sees an increase in these crimes. This is primarily due to packages and checks being delivered for the holiday season.

Try to collect your mail every day, recommends the Sheriff’s Office, and do not leave it in the roadside boxes overnight. The safest approach, they say, is to use a Post Office Box for any mail involving personal identifying information or items of value. Deputies also ask the public to help keep an eye out near their mail boxes, or around other mail box box clusters they may be driving by, and report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff’s Office by calling (559) 675-7770.
