Second Suspect Arrested In Tackle Box Robbery And Murder

MADERA COUNTY — The Madera County Sheriff’s has announced that deputies arrested the second suspect in the Tackle Box robbery and murder shortly before 5 p.m. this afternoon.

Tackle Box employee Dharampreet Singh Jassar, 20, of Caruthers, was killed when two men entered the store on Road 26 at about 10:50 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, stole cash and two large boxes of cigarettes, then fired several shots, one of which struck Jassar and killed him.

Savirant Singh Athwal, 24 years old of Fresno, was arrested without incident shortly before 5 p.m. this afternoon during a vehicle stop on Highway 99 north of Avenue 18 ½.

Athwal is the cousin of the first suspect arrested in this case. He will be booked into the Madera County Department of Corrections tonight on a no-bail warrant for murder and robbery.

The first suspect was arrested near Kerman by Fresno County Sheriff deputies on the day of the incident, for an unrelated offense. Armitraj Singh Athwal, 22, of Modesto, was taken into custody about 40 minutes after the incident.

Both suspects will be held without bail at the Madera County Department of Corrections, charged with strong-arm murder and robbery.

Madera County Sheriff’s Detectives have been actively following leads on this case since it occurred. Additional follow-up investigation is currently underway so no further details are being released at this time.
