Scammers Change Their Game Targeting Seniors

MADERA COUNTY – Sheriff John Anderson is warning the public about a new ruse designed to pry personal information out of Senior Citizens.

“They’re no longer just saying they represent a Sweepstakes company, now they’re claiming to be a part of that company’s Senior Citizen Unit,” says Sheriff Anderson.

“They’re undoubtedly aware of the growing awareness of several scams targeting our senior citizen population. So why not claim to represent a unit that caters specifically to that target audience? It’s a sham.”

In the last three years, Sheriff Anderson has issued as many as 100 fraud alerts. Despite the numerous warnings, scam artists are still finding ways to prey on the elderly.

“For every warning we issue, they’ve already come up with another creative way to con you,” says Anderson.

The Sheriff warns that no legitimate company asks you for personal information. No legitimate company instructs you to send cash. No legitimate company is going to ask you to give out your credit card information in order to collect a prize.
