Reopen Yosemite With State Funds

Dear Editor,

It’s finally Autumn, the long awaited time when visitors can enjoy the crisp air and riotous display of color in our National Parks.

This opportunity has not been lost during Utah Governor, Gary Herbert’s watch. Governor Herbert has negotiated an agreement with the White House to benefit all states wanting to support their own tourism industry, gateway communities, and thousands of their employees.

Governor Herbert has agreed to re-open Zion National Park with state funds which will not be reimbursed by the federal government. Governors from at least three other states are considering this option.

True colors are being currently being displayed in California’s crown jewel of the National Park system and those colors are all Brown.

Jerry Brown, to be exact. Governor Brown has indicated that he has no interest in utilizing state funds to rescue Yosemite, Sequoia or Kings Canyon National Parks. One may only surmise that he considers the pleasure, employment and revenue generated by these treasures to be frivolous compared to other of his legacy projects.

May I call upon the collective wisdom of the Madera and Mariposa County Boards of Supervisors to quickly draft a letter urging Governor Brown to please put ego and politics aside and do the right thing. And to do it now.
