Oakhurst Man Shot In Dispute Over Marijuana Grow

OAKHURST — Detectives and crime scene investigators have been arriving for the past couple of hours at a home in the 52000 block of Road 423, following a fatal shooting.

According to Sheriff Jay Varney, there was a trespass marijuana grow on the residents’ property, where they had lived for several years. Shortly after 7 p.m. this evening, an argument apparently ensued when the growers came onto the property. That led to multiple gunshots being fired and a 47-year-old male resident died at the scene.

There were two other individuals present in the house when the shooting happened. The suspect or suspects then left the scene in what is being described as a bluish-green minivan. The make and model are not known at this time.

CPR was immediately attempted by witnesses and deputies at the scene but it was unsuccessful.

The person or persons responsible for the homicide remain at large. These are preliminary details and the investigation is in the early stages. Witnesses at the scene were understandably very emotional and details are unclear at this time.

We will update when more information becomes available.
