OAKHURST — A multi-vehicle accident late Friday evening on a busy stretch of Highway 41 on the north end of town sent one juvenile down the hill to the hospital with major injuries.

At approximately 10:25 p.m., emergency crews were called to respond to the scene of a three-vehicle accident on Highway 41 near El Cid Restaurant.

According to CHP on site, two vehicles had just driven from the parking lot of El Cid and were traveling southbound on Highway 41, one in front of the other, at a stated speed of approximately 15 miles per hour.

The first car southbound was a Nissan Ultima four-door passenger car driven by an adult female, followed by a Ford F-150 truck driven by an adult male.

The juvenile involved in this accident was transported by ground to the hospital with major injuries.

Coming northbound on Highway 41 at the same time was a juvenile male in a Ford Ranger truck, traveling at an undetermined high rate of speed, according to CHP.

For unknown reasons, the Ranger veered into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane. The female driver of the Nissan took evasive action, attempting to swerve all the way around the Ranger by going as far to the east side of Highway 41 in the northbound lane, as possible.

The Ranger and the Nissan sideswiped one another on their passenger sides, causing the over-sized, off-road tires of the lifted Ranger to shear off both passenger door panels on the Nissan.

CHP says the Ranger then collided head-on with the Ford F-150.

The two adult drivers sustained minor injuries in the collision. The juvenile male was transported by ground ambulance to a hospital with major injuries.

No alcohol or drugs are suspected, say authorities. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
