O’NEALS — Minarets student Tiana Freeland, 17, is busy planning an important event as part of her Senior Legacy Experience, as she prepares to put on a prom for special needs youth.

“All seniors at Minarets are required to put on some sort of project that benefits the community,” says Tiana, explaining the SLE program.

“Because my two younger sisters have disabilities, I have developed a love for those with special needs and have volunteered many hours with Joni and Friends.”

Tiana continues that Joni and Friends is a disability ministry dedicated to ministering and providing respite and care for families with disabilities.

“For my project, I decided to put on a prom for special needs youth, ages 15 to 21. And it’s free!” An Evening to Treasure Prom will be on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, hosted at Northpointe Community Church, located at 4625 W. Palo Alto Avenue in Fresno.

“We anticipate one hundred honored guests,” Tiana says. “Each will be assigned a ‘buddy’ who will stay with them for the duration of the event and be their host. Several hundred volunteers will also be participating.”

Each Honored Guest will be provided with a prom dress or tuxedo, hair and makeup done at the event, Tiana adds. Guests will also receive a corsage or boutonniere, jewelry for the girls, and shoe shining for the boys, along with “tiaras and crowns to remind them that they are all seen as a prince or a princess in God’s eyes.”

The swanky evening also includes professional photography, a limousine ride and a walk down the red carpet surrounded by cheering fans and paparazzi, followed by dinner and dancing.

“We have partnered with Joni and Friends Central California, Spirit 88.9 Radio, Assistance League of Fresno, Northpointe Community Church, and many others to make sure that this prom will be a memory that our honored guests will treasure forever!”

Registration for guest, host and volunteer can be made via www.aneveningtotreasure.com.

“Business sponsorships are also available to help us put this event together,” Tiana notes. “We need to get the word out and promote this event so we get the best attendance possible and celebrate those who otherwise might not be able to attend a prom.”
