O’NEALS — Johnna McDougald and Michelle Shattuck were the reason why Minarets Mustang Junior Varsity girls soccer team had an undefeated season. Michelle played on the U.S. National team in college, and Johnna played throughout high school, and coached her daughter Ryan McDougald, a sophomore on the JV girls team. With all the endurance drills and ball control drills, they pushed players to be the best we could be.

As the league season has started the JV girls soccer team has been undefeated. With our first away game against Carruthers we were excited and nervous. In previous years, the Minarets JV girls team has never won against Carruthers, but this year was a turning point. We pulled out a win of 3-0.

It was pretty exciting to win our first game of League, and against a team we never thought we could possibly beat.

A few games later we played Riverdale, which was a home game for Minarets. We beat them 5-0. It was an extremely tough game with the girls getting tired quickly.

In the beginning of the season, we didn’t know how to play as a team. Girls had entered the team without knowing hardly anyone, which made it harder to work as a team. This is where practice after school comes into play: it not only made us better, but it brought us together. With having different skills and abilities from other players, at first it was difficult for us to rise up and play as a team.

“We came together as a team and overcame all of the obstacles that were presented to us,” Bethany says.

In our opinion, the team formed a bond that will last longer than the soccer season and carry on throughout all of our lives.

Team members include (alphabetically): Savanna Camocho, Hannah Flanagan, Raegan Fringer, Hannah Hardcastle, Sabrina LaFranco, Lilly Lopez, Ryan McDougald, Kameron Moore, Beth Morgan, Faith Moseley, Vanessa Nelson, Ashley Roland, Brianna Roland, Krysten Siebert, Ally Soles, and Berklee Walters.
