Mariposa Sheriff Warns Of Telephone Scam

MARIPOSA COUNTY – The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is warning all residents about a telephone fraud that’s targeting the mountain area.

Scammers are using scrambling devices to change the phone number shown on the caller ID, in some cases showing the Sheriff’s Office phone number of 209-966-3615, or even just showing 911.

The scammers are identifying themselves as Sheriff’s Office personnel and using names of current staff members or those working for other governmental agencies. They tell the individual called that there is a warrant out for their arrest and they need to call another phone number immediately or be arrested by law enforcement.

“This call is a scam, and these scammers are trying to defraud you of your money,” says Sheriff Doug Binnewies. “We recommend that you discontinue the call immediately. We would like to remind everyone not to give personal information out over the phone.”

Please contact the Sheriff’s Office if you believe you have been a victim of this scam.
