Mariposa Air Fair Offers Free Airplane Rides

MARIPOSA – The Mariposa Yosemite Airport will host the annual Mariposa Air Fair and Family Adventure Day on Saturday, Apr. 26. Gates open at 8 a.m. and the festivities last until 3 p.m. with free airplane rides for youngsters.

The Air Fair is a fly-in community event featuring a range of attractions including fly-bys and demonstrations, antique aircraft, Warbirds from the WWII era, experimental aircraft, and radio controlled model airplanes.

Free airplane rides for youth ages 8 – 17 will be available from 8 a.m. until noon through the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles Program (parent or legal guardian must be present). Early birds will have the best opportunity to fly.

2014-Air-FairA fire truck from the Mariposa County Fire Department will be putting on an exciting demonstration as well. There will be plenty of interesting community displays and vendor booths to explore for both adults and children.

Hungry citizens can start the day off right as the Mt. Bullion Mariposa County Fire Station 25 hosts a pancake breakfast from 8 – 11 a.m. The hearty meal includes pancakes with butter and syrup, sausage, eggs, coffee and orange juice for a $5 donation to the station. Stay fueled later on with a great tri-tip or pulled pork lunch.

Kids can take a spin in the full-motion flight simulator or test their skills in the craft or water-rocket stations. For the “kids at heart” there will be classic cars and hot rods, and musical guests. There are great raffle prizes up for grabs, including chances to win a flight in the classic blue Waco airplane featured on the website.

Organizers of the event are members of the Mariposa EAA Chapter 1261, whose mission is to promote local youth and adult aviation and community awareness.

For safety reasons, only certified guide dogs are permitted at the event; others must be left at home.

Admission is just $2 per person with children 10 and under admitted free of charge.

If you don’t want to park at the airport, it’s possible to ride the Trolley to the Air Fair, with pick-ups and drop-offs at the Westamerica Bank parking lot located at 5121 Highway 140 in Mariposa. The first ride is at 8 a.m. with the final drop off at 4 p.m. Riding the trolley is free.
