OAKHURST — Oakhurst Medical Group will host the American Cancer Society’s free “Look Good, Feel Better” program, with one workshop per month for three non-consecutive months, beginning Monday, Mar. 14. The program repeats on Monday, Jun. 13 and again on Monday, Sept. 12. Look Good Feel Better holds group workshops across the United States, teaching beauty techniques to female cancer patients to help them combat appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Local stylist Donna Dozier of The Parlour Salon will lead the workshops.
Look Good Feel Better also offers programs for teens, say organizers, as well as individual consultations in select areas, Spanish language and Spanish/English programs, and a website for men undergoing cancer treatment. Since 1989, Look Good Feel Better has served more than 800,000 women in the United States and is supported by more than 15,000 volunteers, according to the organization.
Eligibility to participate includes women who are currently undergoing cancer treatment, about to undergo cancer treatment, or have recently completed cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or other forms of treatment).
Only program participants may attend the workshop. Due to confidentiality and comfort level of the patients, as well as space restrictions, this protocol is necessary, say organizers, ensuring that each participant receives full attention to gain skills and confidence for increased independence.
A patient may attend more than one workshop, however, she should bring her original LGFB cosmetic kit with her to the additional workshop as a new kit will not be provided. Patients with a recurrence of cancer and who are receiving another round of treatment may attend another workshop and receive a new cosmetic kit.
