Local Choirs Join Together For Christmas Cantata

Submitted by Monika Moulin

OAKHURST – For the fourth consecutive year, more than 50 singers from local area church choirs will come together for a beautiful Christmas program, complete with accompaniment from a live orchestra.

Singers from New Community United Methodist Church, Oakhurst Lutheran Church, Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church, Christ Church/Anglican and others join together to present a Christmas cantata.

This event has, in just four short years, become one of the Oakhurst area’s most highly anticipated holiday musical offerings.

The choir is wonderfully multi-generational, ranging all the way from nearly 90-year-old Coarsegold resident Bob Ornberg, one of the bass section singers, to YHS senior and percussion phenom Jeff Foster.

This year’s piece will be, “The Promise of Light,” a Christmas cantata written by Joel Raney, which blends traditional carols with original music to tell the timeless story of the birth of Christ, and God’s eternal gift of light for the world..

In addition to the live orchestra, part of the musical accompaniment includes a little-seen but always fascinating “four-handed” piano part, where two pianists actually share the bench and both play one one piano at the same time.

There will be two performances on Sunday Dec. 15, at Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church, the first one at 4 p.m., and the later one starting at 6:30 p.m.

Past years’ presentations were mostly all standing room only, even one year when there was pouring down, freezing rain. Be sure to get this on your holiday calendar now!

Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church is located at 39696 Highway 41, just south of Oakhurst.
