Fires Close Highway 41 South Of Road 200

MADERA COUNTY – Firefighters have been busy today with fires along Highway 41 near Road 200.

Just before 4 p.m. today, crews responded to a travel trailer on fire on Veater Road south of Coarsegold. First engine on scene reported that the trailer was fully involved, and had spread into the vegetation. The fire was called controlled at 6:48 p.m. at .18 acres.

Within about eight minutes of the dispatch, firefighters had the fire contained. But before they could finish mopup and call it controlled, word came in of multiple fires along the east side of Highway 41 just south of Road 200 near the Experimental Range.

A full wildland dispatch was called up, including tankers and helicopters, and Highway 41 was closed down southbound to allow safe and expedient access for fire equipment. Northbound traffic was stopped near Road 406.

As of 8 p.m., all three fires were controlled, according to the Incident Commander. Motorists were faced with long delays as one-lane traffic control was put in place just after 6 p.m., and it is estimated that it will be about 8 – 8:30 p.m. before the roadway reopens completely.
