Firefighters Make Good Progress On Camp Fire Near Bass Lake

SIERRA NATIONAL FOREST — Firefighters have made good progress on the Camp Fire, burning on Central Camp Road near Forest Road 6S06 near Bass Lake.

A new estimate has the final size of the fire at 3.25 acres; there has been no update on containment from the 30 percent as of 4 p.m. We will update here when a new report comes in.

The Camp Fire was reported at about 1 p.m. today, and by 4 p.m., firefighters, with assistance from air tankers and helicopters, had a hose lay around the entire perimeter and had stopped the forward progress.

Smoke from the Camp Fire could be seen from all over North Fork, Bass Lake and the surrounding area. Boaters on the lake were warned away from the dam area by Sheriff’s Patrol to allow safe access for dipping water by helicopters fighting the fire.

Campers and residents at Gaggs Camp, Whiskers Campground and Central Camp were all warned to be prepared, but no evacuations were necessary.

Central Camp Road remains closed at Road 274, and five miles up from the intersection.

The Sierra National Forest is being assisted by Cal Fire, Madera County Fire and the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.
