Fire Prevention Rally Kicks Off Big Week

fire-prevention-week-mariposaMARIPOSA — The community is invited to attend a National Fire Prevention Week Rally to kick off the start of an annual awareness campaign.

The family fun event that’s designed around fire safety and injury prevention takes place at the Mariposa Fairgrounds on Sunday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

National Fire Prevention week is observed in the US and Canada and was created in 1925 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire tore through Chicago, killing up to 300 people and displacing 100,000 residents.

Areas of education will include school bus evacuation, home fire safety tips, safe burning practices, animal safety during emergencies, Red Cross Team Firestopper presentations, and emergency equipment awareness. Organizers are busy planning games for kids, and a SCOPE fingerprinting for kids, and all visitors will have a chance to meet local emergency responders.

Free raffle entries will be available, with prizes including smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, flash lights, gift cards and more.

This is a super-fun, activity and awareness-driven day for the entire family and the event sponsor, Fire Safe Council of Mariposa County, hopes attendance will be high, just like the chance of fire danger in the foothills.
