Fire In Mariposa County On Highway 49, Evacuations In Progress

MARIPOSA COUNTY — Firefighters are on scene of a vegetation fire burning south of Highway 49 at Ching Road near the Lutheran Church southeast of Mariposa.

At 1:45 p.m., a full wildland dispatch was called up for reports of the fire, which was reported at 3 acres when the first resources arrived at scene at 1:56 p.m.

Air Attack is overhead, with four air tankers and three helicopters, and engines from Cal Fire, Mariposa County Fire and Sierra National Forest.

Resources just released from the Ben Fire are being diverted to the new “Spring Fire,” including two strike teams of engines and five crews from Mt. Billion.

The fire has since grown to an estimated 40 acres, and is said to be “threatening Highway 49.”

The Sheriff’s Office is notifying nearby residents to evacuate homes in the path of the fire on Ashworth and Allred Roads immediately. The fire has spotted across Highway 49.

Engines are staging for structure protection throughout the threatened areas.

2:45 p.m. UPDATE – The fire has jumped Highway 49 and they are evacuating Allred from Highway 49 north to Morning Star Lane and evacuating Ashworth from Highway 49 south to Old Oak Lane.

Highway 49 is now closed in the area of the fire.

At 3:08 p.m., five additional engines from the Madera Cal Fire Stations were dispatches to the fire, including Bass Lake, Rancheria and Coarsegold.

The fire is now estimated at 60 acres, with a 10 acre spot.

At 3:20 p.m. reports are coming in of spots on structures, additional engines responding for structure protection.

PG&E is reporting a power outage stretching from Triangle and Darrah Roads on the north, south to Eastman Lake, affecting 2,071 customers.

An evacuation center has been opened at Woodland School, 3394 Woodland Drive.
