Fire Burning Near Hornitos

The “Gaines Fire,” burning near the town of Hornitos has burned 1,667 acres and is now 100% contained, as of the most recent update at 6:45pm on Thursday.

The fire started at about 12:45pm on Tuesday, June 12th at Mount Gaines Road and Hornitos Road, Northwest of Catheys Valley, near the community of Hornitos. The cause of the fire has been determined to be a bird flying into the 70 KV power lines.

There are no structures threatened at this time. Corbets Creek residents had been evacuated, but were allowed to return to their homes when the evacuation order was lifted at 9:00pm on Tuesday.

On the scene are fire crews from CAL FIRE, Mariposa County Fire, Merced County Fire, and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Currently there are 2 fire engines and 2 fire crews on site. Crews will remain on scene until further notice to maintain the line and do mopup and patrol.

There is one injury reported at this time.
