Driver Airlifted After Single-Vehicle Crash On Deadwood

OAKHURST — An elderly North Fork man was airlifted after he crashed his vehicle on Deadwood just south of Oakhurst this evening.

Just after 10:30 p.m., a woman called 911 to report having seen a car drive off the roadway about two miles south of Victoria Lane on Highway 41, but was unsure of the location.

It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to find the 1940 Ford Coupe some 30 feet down the embankment on the east side of the road, after seeing the tracks where it left the roadway.

According to CHP at the scene, the vehicle was northbound on Highway 41 when, for unknown reasons, it went off the right side of the roadway, hit a telephone pole and overturned. The driver, Herbert Curry, 88, was not wearing a seatbelt, and was ejected through the passenger side window.

Paramedics and firefighters placed him on a litter and brought him up to a waiting Sierra Ambulance unit, then transported him to a landing zone at Von’s, where he was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
