Contest Sunday For Best Oakhurst Pizza

OAKHURST – Set aside some time this weekend for fundraising, football and pizza.

Once again, it’s time to find out who makes what voters consider to be the most delicious slice in town.

The Sierra Oakhurst Kiwanis will sponsor the 2nd annual “Best Pizza in Oakhurst” contest at the Oakhurst Community Center on Sunday, Jan. 19, from 12 – 4 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance and can be purchased through Kiwani members, and participating restaurants. Ready to throw their pizzas into the fire, figuratively speaking, are chefs from Di Cicco’s Italian Restaurant, Round Table Pizza, Me-N-Ed’s Pizza, Pizza Factory and Sugar Pine Pizza Take ‘n Bake.

Tickets at the door are $12. Each ticket holder receives a slice of pizza from each participating restaurant and ultimately it’s ticket holders who vote and decide on the best pizza.

The current defending pie champion is Pizza Factory, having claimed the honored title for 2013. Last year, about 160 people came out to judge the pizzas, and this year organizers, including Kiwanis member and committee chairperson Bruce Howard, are anticipating about 200.

All the pizzas are donated, making this a strong fundraiser for Kiwanis that, in turn, benefits the community. Kiwanis will use the proceeds to fund scholarships for graduating seniors from Yosemite and Minarets high schools, along with donations to Children’s Hospital and other charitable causes.

Organizers have also put together a raffle with gifts from Discount Grocery and Sierra Ambulance, among others.

Don’t worry about missing Sunday football. To enhance the ambiance surrounding this occasion, Sears Hometown Store in Oakhurst has donated big screen televisions for the day, and DISH is providing the signal, so you can eat pizza, watch championship football and then tell your friends what a good thing you’ve done.
