Community Unity At Oakhurst College Campus

OAKHURST – The Oakhurst College Center will hold its annual Community Unity event on campus Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This event brings mountain area vendors, service groups, and colleges together to celebrate the foothills community. There will be free food, music, workshops, games, and prize drawings.

Every half-hour starting at 12:00 p.m., Lowell Young, President of the Yosemite Area Audubon Society, will give a 20 minute presentation on the threatened Tri-colored Blackbird. Mr. Young will discuss the recent decline in numbers of this bird in the Central Valley, as well as the Yosemite Area Audubon’s role in a collaborative effort to restore local populations. Mr. Young and representatives of the Yosemite Area Audubon Society will also be available throughout the event to answer questions.

From 11:30 a.m. to noon, Chris Cortes, Director of Financial Aid, will give a workshop on affording college.

Some of the local attendees include: Boys and Girls Club of Oakhurst, CalVet Connect, Madera Community Action Partnership, Camarena Health First 5, Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce, Soroptimists of the Sierra, Young Living Essential Oil, Sierra Telephone, Madera County Workforce Investment Corporation, Joelle Leder Photography Studio, Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, Oakhurst Kihon Karate, Head Start, and the Yosemite Western Artists Association.

To assist students seeking to transfer, representatives from Fresno Pacific University, UC Merced, and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco will be in attendance.

From Reedley College / Oakhurst Center / Madera Center, faculty, Academic Counseling, Veterans’ Services, Financial Aid, Health Services, Study Abroad in Cuba, the OC Club, and Student Government will be available to provide information and answer questions.

The Oakhurst College Center is located off of Highway 41 on Civic Circle Drive behind the Rite Aid store in Oakhurst. We hope you can join us! For further information, please call 559-683-3940.
