BGC Kids Do Their Part For The River

Submitted by Peggy Decker

OAKHURST – The Oakhurst Boys and Girls Club (BGC) performed a great community service this afternoon, learning about their watershed, and contributing to its health and well-being.

In collaboration with Justine Reynolds (AmeriCorps) and Brittany Dyer (Chowchilla/Fresno Watershed), the kids helped with an early bird version of the Oakhurst River Parkway 5th Annual Great Sierra River Clean-Up.

First, the kids sat in on a 40-minute presentation done by Justine and Brittany and learned about the Parkway, its plants and animals, and the watershed in the town of Oakhurst. They also learned how litter and irresponsible people affect the watershed’s health and sustainability, and what they can do to help.

Afterwards, they went out on the Parkway (between the Club and OCI) and spent over an hour picking up litter, as well as identifying plants and animals they learned about in their little class.

Our BGC members had a great time and came away with new valuable knowledge about their area. We were lucky to have these two amazing gals, Justine and Brittany, volunteer their day to come help out in our community and with our Club! Thanks you ladies!

The main Great Sierra River Cleanup 2013 will be Saturday Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Oakhurst River Parkway. Please meet in the Sierra Star parking lot. There will be snacks, drinks, fun, and prizes!
